Digital platforms have gained increasing economic importance in recent years. The rise of digital platforms also creates new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), for example by opening up new distribution channels or acquiring new customer groups. At the same time, the new technology also gives rise to risks that must be taken into account.
In 2015, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute KETI and Fraunhofer IOSB have launched a project financed by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE). Based on Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) concepts, both partners are investigating integrated architectures and technologies for a web of distributed smart factories.
The Smart Factory Web aims to form a network of smart factories with flexible adaptation of production capabilities and sharing of resources and assets to improve order fulfilment.
The Smart Factory Web was accepted as IIC Testbed by the Industry IoT Consortium (IIC) in the course of its consortial meeting on 19 September 2016 in Germany. Since 2018, Microsoft Corporation and since 2020 SAP have joined the testbed consortium.

The project creates values in three respects:
The idea of the Smart Factory Web is to provide a marketplace for industrial production that mediates between production orders and registered factory assets and capabilities.
Our industrial marketplace offers an intelligent search for factories, products, production capacities and capabilities.
Factory-to-factory interoperability with the industrial standards OPC-UA and AutomationML.
Flexible adaptation of production capabilities and sharing of resources/assets in a web of Smart Factories to improve order fulfillment.
Provide the technical basis for new business models with flexible assignment of production resources across factory locations.
The Smart Factory Web enables the modeling and visualization of supply chains and entire supply networks. The transparent presentation of the entire supply network is the prerequisite for risk management, the basis for checking sustainability criteria and fair trade principles.

The following technologies are used in the Smart Factory Web:
Standardized description of factory plant data using the open standard AutomationML (Automation Markup Language).
Use of OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) as platform-independent, service-oriented architecture.
Standardized digital representation of assets using the Asset Administration Shell (AAS).
SensorThings API (OGC standard) to provide an open and consistent framework for connecting IoT sensor devices.
Integration of International Data Spaces (IDS) technology to enable secure and trusted data exchange in business ecosystems.
Enable cross-site usage scenarios with secure Plug & Work functions and data analytics.
